Cate Contino Cowit entered public service as an Assistant Director, Government & Community Relations at MTA New York City Transit in 2016, after more than 12 years in the non-profit sector with the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG).

As an Assistant Director, Cate spends the majority of her time working to improve safe, affordable, dignified and reliable public transportation in New York City. She is particularly focused on bus improvement projects.

After-hours, she can often be found with yarn-laced fingers and a crochet hook in hand.

Cate graduated with honors from the SUNY University at Albany with a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and Cognitive Science. She is a Senior Fellow with the Environmental Leadership Program (Eastern Region, 2011) and a New York Community Trust Leadership Fellow (Spring 2016).

Cate is a native New Yorker by way of the Finger Lakes and proud Brooklyn transplant. She happily lives in Prospect Lefferts Gardens with her husband, Jay Cowit, and their rescue cats, Sir Catrick Stewart and Cat Mulgrew.
