Nature for All: Urban Youth and their Access to the Outdoors

A discussion about youth and their relationship to the
outdoors, the challenges lower-income communities face and how it all ties into the
environmental movement.
Date: May 31, 2008
When: 10 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (lunch provided)
Where: Mill Building, 60 Island Street, Lawrence, MA
Cost: $10 (lunch included)
This issue forum, hosted by the Environmental Leadership Program, will examine today's
urban youth and their relationship with the environment with a particular focus on the
challenges affecting lower-income communities. Some of the issues to be addressed: health
of youth & children affected by concentrated poverty, racial/ethnic segregation,
inequitable distribution of health and social services, how communities define environment,
and physical and mental health impacts of poverty.
After gaining an understanding of issues affecting access to the outdoors, participants
will hear the stories of community members in an open forum that will lead to a discussion
on ways to address the issues at a local level. Participants will also have the
opportunity to engage in discussion with invited speakers.
