APPLICATION PROCESS
Guidelines
To participate in the Southeast Regional Network's Training Series for Emerging Leaders,
you must be selected as an ELP Fellow. The application consists of the following:
- Online application form
- Current resume or c.v. (maximum of three pages)
- Narrative responses to application questions (below)
- One letter of recommendation from an individual familiar with your work. Letters must be
received by the application deadline and must be sent by the reference via email to
southeast(at)elpnet.org (as a Microsoft Word
attachment or in the body of an email), or by fax to 202.332.3327.
Applicants must submit one e-mail to southeast(at)elpnet.org with your narrative responses
and resume/cv attached as Microsoft Word documents, or in the body of the e-mail.
Please do not send supplemental materials, PDFs, images, documents with graphics, or other
large files.
Please be sure your name is on each document you submit.
Letter of Recommendation
The recommendation letter should be from an individual familiar with your work and abilities,
and should answer the following questions:
- What is your professional relationship with the applicant?
- What talent and potential for leadership have you seen in the applicant?
- What are the specific ways ELP could benefit the applicant, based on your knowledge of
his/her personal background, professional experience, and skills?
- Does this applicant have the time and energy to participate in the Training Series
and engage with a community of peers?
Letters must be received by the application deadline and must be sent via email by the
reference as a Microsoft Word attachment or in the body of an email.

Selection Results
The Selection Committee will communicate its decisions four to five weeks prior to the first retreat.
Please notify us of any changes in your contact information or ability to be contacted,
in the event that we need to get in touch with you for additional information.
APPLICATION QUESTIONS
1. ELP aims to create a community of individuals from throughout the environmental
field by actively recruiting emerging leaders from academia, government, non-profits, and
the private sector. ELP promotes diversity of race and ethnicity, gender identity, sector,
professional background, values and traditions, and environmental issue expertise. Describe
the unique perspectives, background, or experience you can offer to the ELP community.
How do you hope to benefit from its diversity and what would you like to contribute to
it? (700 words maximum)
2. Describe the evolution of your professional work and your contributions to
the practice or thinking about current environmental issues on the national, state, or
local level. Feel free to discuss your personal background and how your experiences
have influenced your perspectives on and strategies for environmental, social, and
economic change. Please be as specific as possible when discussing activities that demonstrate
your public leadership ability or potential. (500 words maximum)
3. What are your long-term goals for your life and career? What strategic
environmental and/or social change do you want to lead and which constituencies do you aim to reach
and how? Please mention any specific work and constituencies in the Southeast region
and your goals for effecting change on a regional level. (400 words maximum)
4. What facets of ELP most appeal to you and why? Specifically, how do you hope
ELP will help you accomplish your professional goals for environmental and social change progress? Feel free
to describe potential collaborations you might pursue with others in the Southeast
region and how they could help you in your work. (400 words maximum)
